Happy Monday and Thanksgiving week, everyone! It doesn't really feel very festive for us over here yet, but more than ever, I feel like I have so much to be thankful for. As I mentioned yesterday, Matthew went to the ER for an emergency appendectomy last Thursday, and as such emergencies often do, it brought everything flying back into perspective. As I spent the night curled up on a very less than luxurious hospital chair, with nurses and the smelly, moaning car accident patient sharing our room often punctuating my fitful sleep with their unwelcome interruptions, I realized how little else is important if you don't have your health and the people you love. I got a little taste of what my mom and Edd went through day after day after week after week, with countless emergencies and hospital stays and nightmares turning into reality on a painfully regular basis. I looked over at my big, strong husband, who always does the hard things for me, but who now couldn't even make it in and out of bed without my help, and I felt so thankful that there was an end to this in sight... that he would get better and go home and our life would go back to normal and we might even love each other more for all of it. Not everyone has that ending to look forward to, and I am thankful this week for life and the people like doctors who protect it for us. You never fully appreciate the absolute pleasure in little things like sinking into your own bed at night and eating fresh (non-hospital or snack machine) food or just having a healthy, independent spouse - until those things are taken away or threatened. Then you realize how making your own bed, washing your own sheets, tidying your own home, and trips to the grocery store are an absolute privilege. Silly arguments and fights over inconsequential things are luxuries awarded only to those with who can afford them. You realize how blessed you are.
Also, Matthew was the sweetest ever when he first woke up from his anesthesia. I wrote down all the sweet/weird/funny things he said within the first couple hours after surgery. I'll never let him forget these...
+ I love you so much. You're the love of my life.
+ I want a sesame bagel.
+ I want some peppermint ice cream.
+ I want to go to the ranch.
+ You're a great wife.
+ I miss my dogs.
+ I'm glad I didn't wake up with boobs.
+ You're so pretty. I love your smile and your little parentheses.
+ Where's Gracie?
+ I want a bow. (bow and arrow set) I should get a bow for all of this.
+ You're my everything.
+ I feel like I'm giving birth
+ You're so beautiful.
+ Oh my gosh, you know what sounds so good? A tall, ice cold cranberry Jamba juice.
+ This is ridiculous.
+ Jenni: I have one more organ than you!
Matthew: I have one more tooth than you.
Jenni: Touche.
+ I'm so happy I'm married to you. I wouldn't trade you for anybody.
Nevermind that we both got suuuuper grumpy after about a day in the hospital. I will choose to remember the good stuff. :)
Hope you all have safe travels wherever you may be going for the holiday this week. I'm sure blog reading will be slowing down, so if this is the last time you tune in for a while, I wish you and your family a very, very happy Thanksgiving. Much love to you and yours from me and mine...

This is hilarious & adorable all at the same time - so glad the surgery was a success and he made it through okay! :)

Hahaha - oh the boob one made me giggle!
ReplyDeleteGlad things are getting back to normal for you both.
Happy Thanksgiving week to you!
Glad to hear he is ok...not sure what I would do with a hubby in the hospital. I love the comments, glad you wrote those ones down :)
ReplyDeleteHappy Thanksgiving!

Those little comments are so, so funny. :) I had an appendectomy several years ago and ended up getting really sick (my appendix ruptured before surgery) so I ended up spending several weeks in the hospital and I was seriously Satan in little girl form. Not kidding. I was mean as a snake for 15 days! Haha! Wish I would have said some sweet things like Matthew, but instead I gave everyone heck for a few weeks. ;) Tell Matthew I hope that he is feeling much better soon and that I completely feel his pain! He's got sympathy from this girl!
ReplyDeleteReally puts things into perspective.

I'm glad he didn't wake up with boobs too. ;)
ReplyDeleteThis melted my heart: "You're so pretty. I love your smile and your little parentheses."
Ok, the "I feel like I'm giving birth" comment made me giggle :) Hope he's feeling beter!
ReplyDelete*better. I do know how to spell.
ReplyDeletewaking up from anesthesia can have some pretty hilarious stories that go along with it :) i like the little things he said... so cute
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely... I couldn't agree with you more. I remember feeling the same way when I had to take my then-fiance to the emergency room during the dead of winter (and believe me when I say this tropical-blooded gal is not a fan of winter driving!) - one week before we were going to get married. Nothing else mattered at that point except his health and our commitment to each other - even if it wasn't "on paper" yet - I felt like that experience symbolized commitment. And I agree that the petty things become even more trivial in light of events that threaten our health and the things that truly matter.
ReplyDeleteI "awww-ed" and chuckled at the things your husband said! I hope he gets better soon and that you also get the rest that you need. :)
Jenni, I'm SO happy to hear he's ok and the end is in sight! It can be so hard seeing our men so helpless. And I love that you wrote these down! I still don't let Dave live down his post-surgery mumbles/rambles. Or the fact that since I was visiting him in Maryland (this was before we got married) to take care of him and had no idea how to get home he was able to trick me into driving to Office Depot right after surgery...with him drugged out of his mind and on crutches with his leg all bandaged up. He decided he HAD to have a wireless keyboard for his computer while he was stuck in bed. Men.
ReplyDeleteAnd LOL at Matthew saying he's glad he didn't wake up with boobs! His extra specific Jamba juice craving is also hilarious.
Such cute & funny comments! Hope he's on the mend soon :) x
ReplyDeletei'm so glad i didn't wake up with boobs.
ReplyDeletethat made me almost pee my pants. so glad everything went well and that he's on the mend!!!
I'm glad to hear he's doing better and on the mend :D You two stay safe and have a wonderful Thanksgiving Xo
ReplyDelete"I'm glad I didn't wake up with boobs."
ReplyDeleteThis made me laugh out loud :) That sounds like something my fiance would say.
My fiance... who recently got his wisdom teeth out, so I got to experience the "after anesthesia" high too. And it's HILARIOUS. It was a whole lot of "I don't even remember falling asleep... what happened? The walls are moving. Do you see the walls moving? This is so crazy. I like you. I'm smiling. Do you see me smiling?" And a lot of him repeating the same thing over and over again because he forgot he already said them.
Good times.
P.S. So glad he's okay!
This is GOOD stuff!
ReplyDeleteThanks for reminding me that I'm blessed. I needed a bit of a reminder this morning... BADLY. =)
I'm glad your husband got to the hospital in time and that things are looking better! I'm sure that must've been scary, aside from how stressful it was.
Of all the things he said, "I'm glad I didn't wake up with boobs" was the most hilarious one, in my opinion. lol.
Thanks for sharing, girl!
Happy {early} Thanksgiving to you, too!
((hugs))
What a great post and reminder! Glad that everything went well! I can definitely feel the love he has for you, glad you tracked those comments. :) Have a great Thanksgiving as well!
ReplyDeleteI want a sesame bagel?? Hahaha that is so random. They are good though! So nice when drugs/alcohol get the sweet words flowing...
ReplyDeleteHappy thanksgiving jenni! Have a fabulous week! I hope Matthew recovers quickly...and does not give birth ;)
SO funny and sweet and random. I love it all.
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad he's ok, I'm appendix-less also! Ouch! Aren't hospital drug induced conversations the best? Hilarious indeed. But maybe conciser that bow and arrow for him, Christmas? What troopers you two are! Sometimes I am thankful for the little hits of reality to snap my mind back into place, and not get carried away taking the wonderful life around me for granted.
ReplyDeleteso so glad he's doing better, I know how scary those unexpected ER trips can be :( no fun! some of his quotes are too funny "I feel like I'm giving birth" I can only imagine your reaction to that one :-P enjoy your Thanksgiving week together, hopefully he'll be feeling much better in time for Turkey day :D

ReplyDeleteSo glad everything went ok. What a scare! I so know how this goes and how much of an impact it can have on your life. My husband did a couple quick stints in the hospital this summer and it is crazy how quickly life, and perspective, can change. Hope you guys are able to rest up and enjoy your Thanksgiving!
ReplyDeletehahahaha apparently Matthew-on-drugs thought having his appendix out would turn him into a woman? the boobs comment seriously made me laugh out loud. I hope he's as sweet to you conscious as he is on anesthesia. :)
ReplyDeletein other news, I'm really happy to hear to everything is going well! wishing Matthew a fast and healthy recovery.
hilarious! good thing he didn't wake up with boobs!!

Wow, he is adorable. And hilarious :) So happy to know he is doing better.
ReplyDeleteI love this! There's a saying about how drunk words are sober thoughts or something like that ... I think it applies to anesthesia and painkillers too! Some of these are completely golden :) So glad he's alright!
ReplyDeleteSo so so sweet!

"I'm glad I didn't wake up with boobs." So hilarious. People say the funniest things after anesthesia. I'm happy your family is safe and sound now, though! Happy Thanksgiving week!

ReplyDeleteLove the quotes, so glad he's ok!

So glad to hear that all is well. Happy Thanksgiving to you guys!
ReplyDeleteOh goodness, I'm so glad he is OK now. That is so scary when someone who is usually so strong is in so much pain! Love the pain med-isms.
ReplyDeleteHow sweet is that?? Gotta love drugs. :)
ReplyDeleteSo sorry you guys had to go through that! Many hugs your way!
Oh I wish I had written down the things my husband (then boyfriend) had said after he had his appendix out. The funniest thing was watching him flirt with the older nurse to try and get a second piece of chocolate SaraLea Mud Cake ;) He doesn't remember any of it...
ReplyDeletehaha! i love that you wrote his little comments down!
ReplyDeletebut even more, i'm glad that he's going to be ok.
The things people say on (legal) drugs is the best ever. And ok, so sometimes the things people say on illegal drugs is pretty funny too, however I don't witness many of those moments. Glad Matt is ok ;)
ReplyDeleteI'm glad Matthew is okay! It's always scary to go to the hospital, no matter what brings you there.
ReplyDeleteThat's pretty funny, and sweet, the things Matthew said when he woke up.
It's nice that you both have each other in times like that :)
So Brent doesn't drink so I have never seen him drunk. He had a procedure done that left him pretty loopy. My favorite was when he kept asking for a McDonald's mcgriddle. Even when we were in the drive thru, he kept asking where is my mcgriddle!
ReplyDeleteSo glad that his surgery went well! How scary for you guys. Love his comments. To sum it up: he loves you and he's hungry. So cute!
